The raucous arrival into Walford and the Queen Vic of the two glamorous nieces of Peggy Mitchell is interesting. It’s almost on par with the death of Bobby Ewin in ‘Dallas’ with the unbelievable stroyline. They arrive for the doomed wedding of Stella and Phil, take command in Peggy’s hour of need and then get control of the pub whilst Peggy, Phil and Ben take a break. I’ve never known so many trusting ‘business owners’ as there are in Eastenders. Most of them let the first person who walks past their stall or business take ‘over’, with no training, whilst they go have a ‘pint’, an argument or ‘a bite to eat in the caff’, handing over all their takings as they leave. It’s a wonder that any of them make a living!!
The two glamorous nieces have never been mentioned or seen before in Eastenders to my knowledge and Peggy didn’t even recognise them at first ,…. but then immediately goes away leaving them to ‘run’ their ‘lucrative’ pub business … it’s just all too daft.
Not only that but their arrival heralds the most ‘bizarre’ advert where the girls are dressed like cowgirls, partying on the bar, with shot glasses in the style of ‘coyote ugly’ watched by the older locals. This advert is so out of context with Eastenders it is laughable. Surely, Eastenders is meant to be a realistic slice of life dealing with current issues dealt to their regular characters whereas this advert is more Dynasty like than Walford worthy.
Update: On the way home last night we saw a poster of the two new girls. One of them was wearing a cowboy hat and tequila shots glasses on a bandelero holding a bottle of tequila.

I preferred it when Pauline had that grey cardie and loads of mashed potato in her saucepan and Sharon had big shoulder pads and a poodle perm.
I have a hard time watching Eastenders. However discussing some of the daft plots with Kim is most amusing.
Yep they may have had daft clothes but at least the plots were more believable …
Daft clothes? I don’t know WHAT you mean! We ‘ad style back then. Cerise lycra, shoulder pads, leg warmers, leggings and pixie boots. And that was just us fellas. Mind you, I never did find a cardie to match Pauline’s…
Well I am rocker: remember big hair, spandex and tight leather trousers. Of course, I lived in Miami in the 80s and yes it was a bad as it seemed on Miami vice. Pastel t-shirts, espadrills and linen wide pocket trousers.
Whatever rings your bell!! Shame about the cardie though.
So I am the only one who owned espadrills I guess?
No .. I have to admit I owned espadrilles too …
I started out as a punk - there were loads of punks out here in the English sticks in the era 1979 - 1982 - the death of Sid Vicious blew it wide somehow. Then, I became a bit of a New Romantic. Just a bit. I lived on a Council housing estate and men got their heads bashed in for looking “cissie”.
Later, I moved elsewhere, and luxuriated in pink pastel jackets with highly defined shoulder pads, I had blonde streaked hair and I was the first man in my family to own a hairdrier.
The mousse, the gel, the mirror sunglasses… MMMMMMM!!
Sartorially, I wanted to be Sonny Crockett of Miami Vice. But the designer stubble simply made me look seedy and the shoes-with-no-socks gimmick simply rubbed my feet red raw. NEVER try it with canvas shoes.
Yes, despite the lack of a Pauline-style cardie, they were good days…
Propangada and Dr Mabuse “Sell him your soul - never look back!”
Pet Shop Boys and Opportunities - “I’ve got the brains, you’ve got the looks…”
The Cure - “I’ve waited hours for this, I’ve made myself so SICK…”
New Order - “I go walking in the park when it get late at night”…
The Mission - “It would tear me apart to feel no one ever cared - for MEEEEEE!!” - oh the startlingly self-centred honesty of that song!!
And then there was Dot Cotton, of course.
Never did the punk or New Romantic thing. I went from nowt to rocker pretty quick. I was into Opera before discovering hard rock/heavy metal. I still love Opera however and go whenever I get a chance.
Hey Andy you’ve had some get-ups … I wish I’d been there to see them all ……
Lets see some photos of all that regalia.
