It seems that sparked by the Mental Capacity Act earlier this month which introduced the concept of the ‘Living Will’ where patients can choose not to be resuscitated if they are seriously ill or elect a person to make that decision for them if they are unable to due to illness. The NHS has elected that ‘Senior Nurses’ can now choose not to resuscitate a patient. Previously it was only a GP or consultant who could make this ‘life or death’ decision.
It seems to me that this is another reason why you would not want to be left at the hands of the NHS especially if you are an elderly patient. Having suffered at the hands of nurses when I had my broken ankle, I would not want or trust any one of those nurses (even the supposedly senior ones) to make a decision like that for either me or any of my family.
