I was pleased to hear that the Government has given homebuyers a ‘break’ and you won’t have to pay stamp duty on a property you purchase under 175K for one year (so will save you 1% tax on the cost of your property). Unfortunately, many properties even with the downturn in prices in the South East are more expensive than 175K so even though this was a step in the right direction is it too little too late.
The fact that we are now officially in a recession and house prices have been predicted to fall for the next two years at least most people wanting to buy would be best served to wait until we hit the bottom of the market or risk having negative equity themselves. The mere fact that as far as I can see this Government really has done nothing much to stop the housing ‘crash’ and in fact their non-action has fuelled it. Ok so we all laugh when estate agents are suffering and not able to buy their next Porsche but the ripple effect of the housing market crash eventually will affect all our lives.
