Feeling sorry for myself
Feb

Well I’ve had a good amount of auditions recently, all for women in their 40’s reminding me that I am actually rapidly approaching middle age - arghhhhhh.  Unfortunately, nobody wants to give me their acting job at the moment.  As you never get feedback from auditions it is really hard to know if you actually did something wrong .. although nine times out of ten they don’t choose you because you just didn’t look like the picture they had in their mind for the character.  I remember when I got cast as ‘Agnes Tebbitt’ in The New Statesman, the Director coming up to me in rehearsals and asking why I wasn’t wearing my glasses … confused I asked what glasses?  He told me he could have sworn that I had glasses on in the audition (which I didn’t) and that is why he cast me!!!  Another time I got cast in an advert because the Director liked the way I fell backwards … it’s such a peculiar business.

Writing about cancer

Andrew, my husband, has asked me to help him write about our experience of colon cancer. Therefore, I am currently in the process of trying to remember and write the bare bones of my experience and feelings in regards to his colon cancer. Andrew, was sedated a great deal of the time post op, to reduce the pain threshold, so he has asked me to fill in the gaps …. we hope to put these accounts both his and mine into a book .. so watch this space.

GRANGE HILL RIP
Feb

Well it seems that the BBC have finally decided to axe Grange Hill after 30 years because they feel it doesn’t reflect the social realism of children’s lives today. This is a pity as it helped me to remember how old I am … I was in Grange Hill when I was 12 and was in the programme at the very beginning with Tucker and Trisha. If social realism is what they are aiming for then the BBC should look at all of their programmes … the axe may come down more than once!!

Update: There is a Facebook group aiming to save the show.

Oh well his strategy didn’t work as he came third in the Florida Primary and it now looks likely that he will validate McCain as he steps down from the race. It’s sad as I liked him. However, Giuliani does have baggage and cannot compete with the wholesome family man image that many of the other possible candidates portray and seems to get votes in the US. Oh well, it will be interesting to see who wins between Romney and McCain as the race is soooooo close.

The US Primaries

I must admit that my husband’s passion for politics is beginning to rub off on me and I have been following the US Primaries. The race to become the Democratic or Republican candidate for President is fascinating .. it is ’soap’ worthy as the race is hotting up between the front runners and ‘dirty tricks’ are coming into play.

I am interested to see if Giuliani will do better than the current polls predict in the Florida Primary. I didn’t understand why Giuliani didn’t campaign in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina … to give himself a momentum that the other candidates now have. Andrew explained to me the reason for his campaign strategy was that certain states hold more representatives than others. Therefore, Florida holds probably 10 times more candidates than somewhere like Ohio and therefore, if you take Florida you stand a good chance of winning the nomination.

It seems to me that in the US you feel like you have much more of a say, if you want to have, in the person who leads your country. I don’t remember voting for Gordon Brown or Cameron …..

Brotherhood

Whilst I was recovering from the cold/flu that has been going round I decided to watch a new series called ‘The Brotherhood’. This series is set in Rhode Island, USA and is based around two Irish brothers, one who is a local representative of Rhode Island and the other who is a gangster. They both wheel and deal in their respective worlds to get what they want. So far I’ve watched 11 episodes and I’m hooked. It’s well put together, well acted and addictive. Now I cannot wait to see the next series … if you get a chance watch it.

Yes today is supposed to be the most ‘depressing’ Monday of the year .. the third Monday in January. I can’t say that I feel particularly depressed today … but there again I don’t feel particularly happy either as I woke up to find I had developed a cold sore on my lip. Now feeling the first tingling sensation of a cold sore in itself would have been fine if I had the ointment to stop it flourishing as a cold sore tends to do … but I searched for zovirax and found I had none!! So maybe I did feel a wee bit depressed at the thought of going out in the rain to buy the ointment that now would only partially stop the onslaught of the sore.

When Gordon Brown announced that inflation was only 3% I was surprised. Where do they get their figures from? What things do they conveniently leave out. All I know is that over the past year or so all my costs have increased - car, petrol, gas, electric council tax, and food. The only thing that did not increase was my pay packet!

The flu bugs got me!

I was so pleased with myself that I never got the lurgy during Christmas and the New Year. Nearly every year for the past 5 years I’ve ended up with some sort of cold or flu bug. So this year I was feeling a wee it smug as I thought I’d got away with it. But recent travels on the underground surrounded by illness has got me, it started with a bad belly, aches and pains and throbbing ears …. damn it.

Today I went up for a part in a police drama called The Bill. Whilst on my way out of the audition another actress who has done reams of work, Rachel Davies, followed me out and started chatting. Rachel was one of the friendliest people I have ever met and made my whole trek across London to Wimbledon .. which is quite a way from where i live worthwhile. She was open and wise in her observations of the highs and lows of an actors life and was very humble for someone who has done lots and lots of great work. I hope I spurred her on to write her book … she had some really good stories just waiting to get out.
