Brotherhood

Whilst I was recovering from the cold/flu that has been going round I decided to watch a new series called ‘The Brotherhood’. This series is set in Rhode Island, USA and is based around two Irish brothers, one who is a local representative of Rhode Island and the other who is a gangster. They both wheel and deal in their respective worlds to get what they want. So far I’ve watched 11 episodes and I’m hooked. It’s well put together, well acted and addictive. Now I cannot wait to see the next series … if you get a chance watch it.

Yes today is supposed to be the most ‘depressing’ Monday of the year .. the third Monday in January. I can’t say that I feel particularly depressed today … but there again I don’t feel particularly happy either as I woke up to find I had developed a cold sore on my lip. Now feeling the first tingling sensation of a cold sore in itself would have been fine if I had the ointment to stop it flourishing as a cold sore tends to do … but I searched for zovirax and found I had none!! So maybe I did feel a wee bit depressed at the thought of going out in the rain to buy the ointment that now would only partially stop the onslaught of the sore.

When Gordon Brown announced that inflation was only 3% I was surprised. Where do they get their figures from? What things do they conveniently leave out. All I know is that over the past year or so all my costs have increased - car, petrol, gas, electric council tax, and food. The only thing that did not increase was my pay packet!

The flu bugs got me!

I was so pleased with myself that I never got the lurgy during Christmas and the New Year. Nearly every year for the past 5 years I’ve ended up with some sort of cold or flu bug. So this year I was feeling a wee it smug as I thought I’d got away with it. But recent travels on the underground surrounded by illness has got me, it started with a bad belly, aches and pains and throbbing ears …. damn it.

Today I went up for a part in a police drama called The Bill. Whilst on my way out of the audition another actress who has done reams of work, Rachel Davies, followed me out and started chatting. Rachel was one of the friendliest people I have ever met and made my whole trek across London to Wimbledon .. which is quite a way from where i live worthwhile. She was open and wise in her observations of the highs and lows of an actors life and was very humble for someone who has done lots and lots of great work. I hope I spurred her on to write her book … she had some really good stories just waiting to get out.

Gary LIttle R.I.P.

I was sad to learn that a friend of mine from my Anna Scher Theatre days, who chose not to follow an acting career but instead became a publican running a pub in Exmouth market called Lennards, passed away suddently just before christmas. Gary Little was a great guy, kind of unassuming, always up for a laugh and good company. Gary you will be missed.

It is probably lucky that Posh is touring with the Spice Girls as it seems that she has been named the worst dressed celebrity in Blackwell’s List in the US . It seems that the Beckham design label may not do as well in the US as it has in the UK ….

David Beckham is quoted as praising Gordon Brown. David you’re not living in Britain at the moment, you’re earning millions of dollars for five years in the US! In fact, you haven’t lived in Britain permanently for a good many years as prior to that you was in Spain so how do you qualify to judge??? It’s like Sean Connery effusing about how brilliant Scotland is when he lives as a tax exile somewhere else. With an impending downturn in the economy where a possible recession could affect many people who earn a normal wage … will Gordon Brown be doing a ‘good’ job then!! David please stick to talking about football.

Race for LIfe

I must admit I believe in the ‘Race for LIfe’ campaign and stress that all women are invited to either walk, trot, dance, or run 5k to raise money for research for breast cancer. They are currently doing an ad campaign to raise awareness about this fund raisingJust before Christmas, I was asked to audition for the advert they are making, in January was told I got it which I was really happy about. Because this advert was for a charity I was asked to take a nominal fee which I agreed to.However, no script arrived so I wondered what I was actually doing in it. When I got there I was amongst many actors as well as non-actors. The scene was set in a working office and they wanted a group of women to say together ‘We’re invited’ holding up the ‘Race for life’ leaflets. Positioning took forever as they shuffled about 25 different women according to ‘colour’ is what they said. In the end, after being placed in many different positions I was eventually put at the back!!! Therefore, I was not really used for it which I must say was disappointing for me and a complete waste of money for them .. especially as they were on such a tight budget.Really why they employed actors to be in it and pay them instead of just using the staff in the office (which was more than half of us anyway) I do not know. However, I wish them luck with their fundraising as the cause is very worthy.

Got an acting job

Just before Christmas I went up for three different acting roles. I am pleased to say that I was successful with one of the auditions I did and I’ve managed to get a wee acting role in an advert for a good cause no less. I am going to be doing an advert to promote ‘cancer research for breast cancer’ … their walk for life. whoopee.
